Nia passed 2nd grade…

visitation. Nia got to go visit 26 second graders today for my son’s show-and-tell and did great! We walked her before going inside in order to release some energy. She sat well for everyone to come and pet on her (except the allergic kid and the one afraid of dogs). Honestly, she exceeded my expectations–she wanted to smell everything and explore, but was willing to be redirected and to sit. I wish I’d have taken pictures, but instead, here’s a picture of Nia waking up my 11 year old for school…good dog! I’ve read that you can train a dog to lick someone face vigorously until they wake up…(guess what Nia’s learning this summer).

Day 6–What I’ve learned about Nia
June 2, 2014 | Uncategorized | 3 Comments
She’s a digger…and is particularly fond of laying down while digging with one paw.
Raw hides give her unformed poops.
She LOVES squirrels, birds, toads and anything else tiny that moves (and by “loves” I mean “wants to eat”).
She will suffer through baths and toothbrushing if it means extra lovin’s.
She has no concept of where her body is when she sleeps.

We all need work.

We are so happy to have Nia home! I have just added an “about Nia” page. Nia, though amazing, has some work to do! She came to us with an ear infection and I have questions of how well she hears. It seems she does better with hand motions along with the verbal commands. She just looks at me funny if I don’t use hand motions for “sit.” She is on treatment for the ear infections.
We live in an upstairs apartment and although initially very willing to come up the stairs by herself, she now will go up one stair and stop, so I am just carrying her 52 pound body up the stairs. After recent consultation on the Tripawd chat, it seems she needs to get stronger. We took a leisurely .5 mile walk this morning and she did great. I am working on a little fitness plan for her as I would like to get her up to 2 miles a day (seems a reasonable goal). Also, I would like her to climb the stairs easily. She is 8 pounds underweight–you can see her ribs–so I think the better nutrition she’s getting will help her strength and stamina.
Thankfully, the vet declared her heartworm free, she’s UTD on shots and will be spayed in June.
I want to thank everyone who has given advice and support so far on tripawd.com–I feel so much better knowing there is a community of dog lovers to help me give Nia the best life ever! I hope I can be equally as supportive for you! ~Sarah
HERE’S NIA AFTER HER POST MORNING WALK 🙂 happy campers.
UPDATE: Apparently 2 miles is far fetched (get it?) for a tripawd…maybe 1-1.5 miles a day…spaced out…lol
